Itty Bitty Rants

Infrequent posts about stuff.

Scott Rosenberg fairly clearly states some comments that I’m hearing echo’d all around the industry these days in his recent column on Salon. I don’t necessarily agree with his final conclusions, but I don’t think that anyone really has any illusions about how successful Microsoft is going to be with their new official push for better security, or, in MS SpinSpeak, “Trustworthy Computing”. Whatever.

  • It’s pretty amazing what you find out sometimes.

It’s pretty amazing what you find out sometimes. For example: While doing our tax returns tonight I found out that our paper shredder sets off the doorbell extension that I’ve installed in the attic. Life is strange some days.

Alias #8 - Max - Okay, let’s get this down now: Rick Jones is a complete headcase. Do NOT start with this issue! That is all. Deadline #1 (of 4) - Marvel - A very good “regular people who have to deal with superheros” story so far. I’m really looking forward to the next couple of issues. The art inside may look really familiar to some of you old Sandman fans.

So I went looking again and finally found a recording of Johan de Meij’s Lord of the Rings Symphony #1 performed by a symphonic band, rather than the orchestral version. I’ve had the chance to perform it several times, and every time it was a wonderful experience. Someday, I will have a horn again.

Quite a haul today from ye’ olde comic shoppe. I’ll go in quality from worst to best to get the crap done first: Blade #1 (Marvel Max) - Oh my goodness did this suck really large oblong rancid-dead-anemone-coated rocks. Ewww. The dialog sucked. The plot and pacing was annoying. The art was okay, but reminded me too much of the Men In Black saturday morning cartoon which I always hated the look of.

I found a better link to the article mentioned in the previous post. I have received a nice response from the author with an invitation to be quoted in piece he’s thinking about writing for the next article that would discuss the opposing viewpoints. One of the things he mentions did jump out at me though was his reaction to the negative feedback. I sounds like he hasn’t been doing a lot of editorials yet, or at least not very many that deal with issues as controversial as this.

Ah, the changing of fashions. Think men wearing pantyhose is weird? It’s probably a bit more widespread than you’d think. Good quote from the article though: That old slogan, “Gentlemen prefer Hanes,” didn’t mean they liked it on their own legs.

It’s been an exciting few days for me. Last Tuesday I took down the network to do a bit of reorganizing. Betsy had not been able to use the VPN client on her work machine at home and so we had talked about replacing our existing firewall with something a bit more flexible, as well as a bit more secure. We had been just running the internal Windows 2000 Server as the firewall and gateway as well as serving various other functions.

Luna Ticks is a really wonderful page put together to debunk the “We never landed on the moon” myths that fly about occasionally. Highly recommended.

I ran across this link about casual software piracy from a mailing list that I’m on. A pretty good article, though some of the comments after the article get a bit idiotic pretty quickly.
