The local watertowers
I’ve been fascinated by the old water towers around Minneapolis and St Paul for quite a few years, but only recently a friend ran across this old newsletter article.

Recent Reading: A King of Infinite Space by Allen Steele
I just finished up “A King of Infinite Space” by Allen Steele. I’ve been working through his bibliography since late last year and I think that while this is not my most favorite of his books yet, it was still definitely worth reading. I think I just couldn’t get his resolution to quite fit the story that I had been reading. It’s not quite the wrong ending for the story, there were just some details that didn’t seem to work quite correctly.

A cola recipe!
A cola recipe! Funny what you don’t find even when you’re looking sometimes. Interestingly enough it does not contain any cola nuts that I can see, though I haven’t looked into the details about how the various oils in the recipe are produced. I hope to be able to give this one a try in the next few weeks, with the modification of using yeast for carbonation, of course. I have some concerns about the phosphoric acid killing of the yeast, but I’ll certainly find out then.

TivoToGo has arrived!
TivoToGo has arrived! A bit late, and a not without some bitterness, but it’s finally here right now and I am currently copying a couple of things off just to see how it goes. I’ve been hearing a lot on the net from people who already had gotten the update that they’re really disappointed about the transfer speed, but I can’t really say that I’m surprised. Even if you are using 802.

I bought an incredibly good techno-jazz album over the weekend: [Saint Germain des Pres Cafe II](http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:4qo7gjtr36i9~T20). It's a compilation of various French techno-jazz pieces, and some of them are incredibly good. If you've heard any of the Hotel Cotes compilations, or like St Germain, you need to hear this.

New toys
So I've got a couple of new toys, but the one that I am the most excited about is the bluetooth GPS receiver. I went ahead and got the [PalmOne GPS Navigator](http://www.palmone.com/us/products/accessories/peripherals/3166NA.html) (Good price at [buy.com](http://www.buy.com)) to use with my [Tungsten T3](http://www.palmone.com/us/products/handhelds/tungsten-t3/) that I bought this last summer. I've only had it for less than 48 hours, but I'm already having a lot of fun with it. It ships with [TomTom Navigator](http://www.

Quantum Ravioli
This is probably getting linked to by everyone by now, but it is so wonderfully entertaining. It reminds me of thought experiments that an old friend and I did in Physics class in high school.

I really strongly dislike ineffectual management
And that's all I really need to say on that matter.

Shell Execution in C#… Finally!
I finally found the .Net Framework objects that allow execution of a shell command! Took long enough, but I found a hint finally [here](http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/1/StartAppInNet.asp) and the SDK documentation and examples are really quite good once you know what object to look for.
