Itty Bitty Rants

Infrequent posts about stuff.

  • Ghost in the new shell?

Ed Bott reports on a new backup option in some versions of Windows Vista that is decidely like Symantec’s Ghost utility. The really exciting thing though, is the possibility that the disk images may be in the VHD format that is used by Virtual PC/Virtual Server! It would be so amazingly handy to be able to take an image of your own machine, boot it up in a virtual console and do some tweaking to see how it behaves before applying those changes to your own machine!

  • You know it’s true

BevNet’s new BevBlog has a theory on energy drink flavors that has more than an inkling of truth to it. I personally can’t stand any of the “energy” drinks that I’ve ever tried and basically have just given up on them entirely. Besides, they almost all have too much caffeine for any normal human, much less for those of us who have dropped it completely.

  • TerraServer used to be cool

People were pretty thoroughly blown away when Microsoft introduced the TerraServer back in the mid 90’s. There, on the web, were millions of acres of scenary from declassified satellite imagery. You could see your house. Heck, sometimes you could see your car. Various services have offered various modifications to the basic idea since then, but today Microsoft did it again with Widows Live Local, which is basically the new version of TerraServer.

  • When it rains it pours

This makes two issues in 4 days with local amusement parks. Do people actually expect this stuff to be safe?

  • Irregular maintenance

Something I thought was worth copying from my recently updated OKCupid profile: In particular I really enjoy the way Gene Wolfe throws the reader into a world where the rules are not set in stone until just after page 100, when everything suddenly snaps into focus and the story takes off at a brisk meander.

  • A bargain at twice the price

I just got out of seeing a preview screening of X3 and there are some positive things to say about it. All of the hair was really well done. The Stan Lee cameo was decent. It was better than Elektra. It might even be better than The Hulk. Unfortunately that’s about all the good things that I have to say about it. I could complain about the dialog that contained only cliches that I’ve heard too many times.

  • A little more spare

Normally I have 4 tabs open in Firefox all day long. One for Gmail, one for Google Reader, and then two for L-Space with one for System Status to keep me logged in and another for actually reading the message base. Today I have only have two open since I shut down L-Space last night, and it’s odd how small the tab strip looks and how I keep on wanting to click through more tabs than I can.

  • Library Opening 013

Library Opening 013, originally uploaded by nstohlma. I attended part of the public grand opening of the new Minneapolis Central Public Library on Saturday May 20, 2006. The new building is gorgeous, and my photos just don’t do it justice.

  • If only?

A friend sent along a link to an LJ post where someone did what they thought covers of three prominent DC comics would look like if the male characters where treated the same visually as the female characters usually are. I think it illustrates the point nicely. Quite possibly not work safe.

  • And so it ends…

I posted last week that I was shutting down L-Space, and tonight was that night. It had a good long run, and I’m proud of the legacy. Good luck to all my old users where ever they end up.
