Itty Bitty Rants

Infrequent posts about stuff.

  • InstallShield 12

Macrovision released InstallShield 12 this morning, and my download of my maintenance fullfilment copy just finished. I’ve heard there were some big changes for the InstallScript language, hopefully for the better. Update: I had heard slightly wrong, or at least read the commentary incorrectly. They changed the way that InstallScript custom actions interact with MSI packages. No big changes to InstallScript here!

  • A phone tree of twisty passages, all alike?

An enterprising person has set up [a text-to-speech engine with his Asterisk PBX setup and allows a caller to interact with the classic Zork text adventure game](http://uc.org/read/Zasterisk). Pure genius! Maybe I can get Leather Goddesses of Phobos setup:

  • A Great Migration

After spending most of the day working on it, I think that I've got everything set up for a decent test on an [Ubuntu](http://www.ubuntu.com) box here at home for hosting things. The good news is that comments work, but unfortunately things are pretty slow. This is almost certainly because the box I'm running things on is dreadfully slow and doesn't have much RAM. If things continue to work well I should have the good box up and running within a couple of days.

  • Before I forget again…

I have put the [login quote file from L-Space](http://www.cavort.org/?page_id=250) up where people can see it. Overall it's a pretty good snapshot of the history and content of the board.

  • A Tale of Two DVD Rental Services

Back in April I procured an Xbox 360, and decided that instead of paying the exorbitant amount of money for single games that I would sign up for a rental service that would, in the end, be cheaper. I’ve been a member of Netflix for several years and find that it works really very good, except that they do not have games. I looked around and finally decided on Intelliflix for 2 reasons: They were cheaper than everyone else by a few dollars, and they also had movies including an entire class of videos that Netflix doesn’t carry.

  • When he’s right

Today’s UserFriendly Strip is really actually quite funny. I don’t always think Iliad’s work is fantastic, but he hits a good joke often enough to keep me reading. For those of you who don’t know the context, this article on Ars Technica gives the rundown pretty well. Synopsis: CMP Media and O’Reilly have trademarked “Web 2.0”. Oi.

  • Adventuring in foreign territories

So now that I’m not running L-Space I don’t have to be running Windows for my server and I should be able to get a configuration that doesn’t have the comment posting issues that I’ve currently got. So today I’m trying out FreeBSD and Ubuntu Linux on a couple of test boxes to see how they run. So far, I’ve loaded up both of them in their “server” default configurations and found out a very interesting thing: I don’t have the patience to learn a command line driven OS anymore.

  • Gotta smash them all

PopCap Games has a new game out: Hammer Heads. I saw the announcement in their regular newsletter and gave it a try. It’s basically a hideously well done whack-a-mole variant that is good enough that I have already registered my copy. Damn crack pushers!

  • From ship to shore

I heard the announcement this week that the people behind Puzzle Pirates are working on a new game called Bang! Howdy. I really enjoyed Puzzle Pirates for awhile and will be signing up for the beta and hopefully playing some this weekend.
