Itty Bitty Rants

Infrequent posts about stuff.

  • Just when you think you’ve got it all covered

Yesterday in a fit of total idiocy I managed to fry my skin pretty badly, though there is actually quite a bit of success to this little story. I always _used_ to fry my head really badly in the sun on weekends like this. But now I've finally gotten into the habit of reliably wearing a good hat so my head, face, and even my neck are just fine. Slightly overexposed, but really just very slightly.

  • A night in the city

I finally got to see some of the [Hot Summer Jazz Festival](http://hotsummerjazz.com) last night. I arrived at Peavey Plaza just after [Frank Morgan](http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:igke4j270waw) and [David Young](http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:7l65mpeh9f5o) took the stage. What a totally excellent start to the evening for me. He and David, along with the rest of the combo played a great set while I wandered around looking for a place to sit. I even finally managed to find one by his second to last number and was able to finish my cheese curds in relative comfort, for sitting on a slab of cement 20 feet away from any smokers.

  • Minding my own business, as I so often am

I know of at least two people who will be interested in this site: [AmigoFish](http://amigofish.com/) In their own words: a way of finding podcasts and videoblogs of interest to you. I haven't created an account for myself yet, or really done much more that just give it a cursory look, but I ran across a reference to it [via an entry on a geographic BlogNeighbor's site](http://garrickvanburen.com/archive/abstruse-i-am) while doing research for something at work.

  • Sign me up!

There's a reason why I was pretty excited when my ex-wife brought home one of the "Happy to pay for a better Minnesota" lawn signs a couple of years ago. It's still in my front porch window and will probably move with me. Today's [full page ad](http://pd.startribune.com/shoppingportal/frame.jsp?url=http://mnstartribune.p2ionline.com/Test/rop/indexnofeaturesDemo.aspx?WebStoryID=10859373&catName=Community%20and%20Government%20:%20Announcements%20&%20Notices) in the Star Tribune [from 203 of the wealthiest taxpayers of Minnesota](http://www.startribune.com/462/story/507891.html) shows that I'm in fairly decent company. It's good to see this sort of activism.

  • Sugar and Spice

[This week's issue of The Escapist](http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/50) is all about women and gaming. Some interesting reading in there. Anyone with more of a feminist bent want to do any commentary? I thought the article about [the possible myth of male focus in gaming](http://www.escapistmagazine.com/link/2189) to be especially interesting.

  • To play is divine

[Joystiq is reporting](http://feeds.joystiq.com/weblogsinc/joystiq?m=167) that Kings Quest III has been [updated and re-released](http://www.infamous-adventures.com/index.php?page=kq3). I came to the King's Quest games remarkably late in the series so I'm looking forward to playing through this.

  • Summer groove

The Twin Cities [Hot Summer Jazz Festival](http://www.hotsummerjazz.com/) starts with a bang this weekend in St Paul at Mears Park. I'll be in the northern woods of Wisconsin, but you can bet that I won't be missing out on next weekend's performances in downtown Minneapolis, and possible some of the other events during the week. This really is the best event for people local to the Twin Cities to get exposed to incredibly good jazz.

  • Disc condoms

Gizmodo has an item about [Elecom K-Scott CD Pouch Dispensers](http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/elecom-kscott-cd-pouch-dispenser-180985.php), which they call kind of useless, and I call a godsend to my constant frustration with not having sleeves or cases for the dozens of discs that I hand out to people every month at work! I have a decent DVD burner in my machine as well as a registered copy of Nero, so I'm the go-to guy for a lot of people when we're archiving or transporting things.

  • Juicy and delicious

I just had a real lychee fruit for the first time. I have had lychee flavored things, and various packaged lychee objects, but have never had the actual fruit. What an amazing little bundle of textures. The exterior of sharp bumps, the inner leathery skin, the meat of the fruit itself, the inner skin before the stone, and then the stone itself. A co-worker just offered one to me out of the blue and I'm really happy she did.

  • Clovers where you least expect them

In the last two weeks I’ve run into something a little different at two places that I’ve been for dinner. It appears that both the new Chatterbox Pub location in Highland Park and Signature Cafe in Prospect Park are serving sodas from The Shamrock Group. So far, the cola and the root beer flavors that I have tried are pretty decent, though nothing stellar. It will be interesting to see if I seem them showing up elsewhere around town, I know the original Chatterbox Pub near my home still has Weinhart’s for their root beer.
