Itty Bitty Rants

Infrequent posts about stuff.

  • Video Test

I'm doing some testing of various video upload services for use with clips that I've been getting from my video camera. This is the [YouTube](http://www.youtube.com) test.

  • If it wasn’t true before…

The East Lake St upswing continues it's stratospheric ascent with [this news in the Strib](http://www.startribune.com/456/story/575589.html) that the owner of Azia (and a few other noteworthy local restaurants) is putting in two new restaurants in the area. The former Ember's/House of Lalibela/Molly Quin's Irish Pub at 33rd and Lake is going to be a pan-asian place, and then he's going to top that by putting in something called the "Manhattan Martini Lounge" at 35th and Lake.

  • It wasn’t meant to be funny. Probably.

Michael J. Nelson from the now gone MST3K has a new gig, but doing the same old thing. [RiffTrax](http://www.rifftrax.com) are audio commentaries that you play on your portable media player while watching a particular movie. It's not _quite_ an original idea, since it is basically like the [commentary podcast that is put up for Battlestar Galactica episodes](http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/downloads/podcast/). The differences are two-fold: These won't end up on the movie DVD, and in theory they're funny.

  • Fun with a doofus

The newest game on XBox Live Arcade is a hoot of a platform puzzler called [Cloning Clyde](http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/c/cloningclydelivearcadexbox360/default.htm). The humor can sometimes be somewhat low brow, but the creativity of the puzzles and the incredibly fun environments and puzzles made me loose track of 2 hours last night and register it essentially instantly. I can't wait to try it in multi-player.

  • Breaking Not News!

WCCO has a [particularly inane bit video about E85](http://www.wcco.com/video/?id=18465@wcco.dayport.com) that I just want to through up my hands and yell "What the Fuck?" about. Essentially the things that you "need to know", as their flashy banner calls it, is that the ethanol companies and corn growers are getting a big boost from the push to use E85 and, though extremely badly presented, the percentage of ethanol included in regular unleaded in Minnesota.

  • The kindness of strangers

"Joe" [commented on an earlier post](http://www.cavort.org/?p=261) that the Standalone Build Engine is still available for InstallShield Professional users if you were a registered user of either 10.x or 11.x. More info available in [this InstallShield knowledgebase article](http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=Q112206).

  • Geek Toy: Digital measuring

I saw [a post on Gizmodo](http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/sticky-yard-digital-measuring-system-184515.php) while digging through my holiday weekend backlog of a really cool new toy that I'm really tempted to get: [The Sticky Yard Digital Measurement System](http://www.stickyard.com/). You stick an adhesive or magnetic custom yard stick to an object, take a picture, process it with their software, and can get accurate measurements of anything in the picture. How cool is that!

  • Coming soon

I just got a pr email from [Smart](http://www.smartusa.com/) saying that they are finally going to launch the Smart brand in the US in 2007 with actual vehicles being available in early 2008.

  • Patriotically unpatriotic

The Patriot Act has [suffered a nice blow from some good people in Connecticut](http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060627-7150.html).

  • Music in my ears

For some bizarre reason my installed version of WP Audioscrobbler stopped working some time in the last few days and after poking at it for a bit and doing some more looking, I ran across something better: [Scrobbler](http://leflo.de/projekte/wordpress/scrobbler/)
