Itty Bitty Rants

Infrequent posts about stuff.

The Escapist has [a really fascinating article](http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/57/10) this week that posits the notion that the adventure game, which I and so many other people morn the lack of good modern versions, has simply evolved into something else entirely.

  • A night at the fringe

I had a lovely evening tonight taking in a couple of [Fringe Festival](http://www.fringefestival.org) shows. Even though I got out of work a bit later than I had expected, the schedule worked well to do a Light Rail Line-Up by first heading up to the [Mill City Museum](http://www.millcitymuseum.org/) for ["The Rat's in the Walls"](http://www.fringefestival.org/showDetail.cfm?showID=540), a one man H.P. Lovecraft tale done in wonderful style and good atmosphere. My only quibble is that I was a bit disappointed in the large film screen that was unused on the wall that really dominated the stage visually.

  • Quotable

It looks like King Kong devastating a nice area rug, but tastes much better than that sounds. - [Dara Moskowitz](http://citypages.com/authors/summary.asp?PPDID=55) [describing a dish](http://citypages.com/databank/27/1339/article14582.asp) at [Los Ocampos](http://www.midtownglobalmarket.org/?q=dining/lunch/44) at the [Midtown Global Market](http://www.midtownglobalmarket.org/)

  • Adding it all up

When I got my new (to me) 2003 Golf TDI in April, I decided that it was high time to actually keep a fuel mileage log to keep track of how things were going. Having tried all sorts of electronic versions in the past, I decided to go old school and got a notepad and pen to keep in the car for each fill up. Unsurprisingly, I've been keeping up very well and only drove off once without getting all the details, most of which were recoverable from the receipt and reseting the trip counter immediately when I realized my mistake just a few blocks down the road.

  • Test Video: DailyMotion

Despite a fairly busy and somewhat inflexible layout, <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com">DailyMotion</a> seems to have a really nice feature set. However my attempts to post through their "Post to Blog" feature rather than copy/paste the string into my own software doesn't quite seem to be working with my installation of WordPress at the moment. <strong>Update:</strong> It actually appears that it did post successfully every single time, but was showing an error on the DailyMotion side of things.

  • Video Test: DailyMotion

<br /><span style="margin-top:0px;"><a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x92hh_butterfly">Butterfly</a><br />Video sent by <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/nstohlma">nstohlma</a><br /></span></div> </div> Test from DailyMotion. Busy layout, nice features. This was posted using the "Post to Blog" feature rather than putting the embeddable string into my own posts. Handy! </div> <div class="st-post-tags"> Tags: <a href="http://www.cavort.org/tag/video/" title="Video" rel="tag">Video</a><br /> </div>

  • Video Test: ClipShack

<a href="http://www.clipshack.com">ClipShack</a> seems to be a pretty decent service. So far I like all of the features that I've seen. It's relatively simple, decently quick, and has a nice amount of space available for uploads. <embed src="http://www.clipshack.com/player-cs-em.swf?key=FDB5B6295A4F69F7" width="430" height="354"> </embed>

  • Video Test: Google Video

Google Video has certainly come a long way since it first opened. The navigation and layout have both improved. The upload process was nice and easy. Unfortunately, no way to lock uploads for private viewing. <embed style="width:400px; height:326px;" id="VideoPlayback" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=8231153339514900901&#038;hl=en"> </embed>

  • Video Test: DropShots

Next test, this one from <a href="http://www.dropshots.com">DropShots</a>. So far the best feature is that it automatically reads the time codes out of whatever you upload so you don't have to input that information manually. Pricing is also a bit spendy for the full accounts, though the option of a one time $99 for a permenant account is rather nice. <center> <embed src="http://www.dropshots.com/dropshotsplayer.swf" Flashvars="url=http://www.dropshots.com/photos/153276/20060729/092822.flv&#038;post=1" width="320" height="310" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"> </embed> <br /><a href=http://www.

  • Video Test: Grouper

Second video test, this time using [Grouper](http://www.grouper.com). Which I think is a really stupid name for a video sharing website. Birds<br /> <em>Really fricking annoying embedded video window removed.</em> <strong>Update:</strong> Well, the site name isn't the only stupid thing about that site. Embedded video windows have 2 glaring issues: You can see the clip I uploaded [here](http://grouper.com/video/Preview.ashx?id=1462938&#038;ap=1&#038;ex=1&#038;t=1.wmv) if you really want to.
