Intermitent immediate gratification
For those who have not been keeping up with the news, [Netflix](http://www.netflix.com) has recently started the rollout of their long anticipated [electronic service, called "Watch Now"](http://www.netflix.com/WatchNow) to complement their existing DVD-by-Mail service. The rollout is being staged to their various million subscribers and I am lucky enough to be one of the relatively early accounts to have the feature activated. As has been covered elsewhere pretty thoroughly, the selection is not huge yet but there is definately stuff worth watching and I am most interested to see if I can get it working through any part of Windows Media Center Edition.

Odd coincidence
About the same time that I implement OpenID on my personal blog for authentication and finally get a personal OpenID running so I can use it elsewhere, I start hearing it talked about all over the place. Nice to see that it might be a technology that gets adopted broadly. The OpenID I plan on using publicly is http://cavorter.cavort.org, so if you see some permutation of that around the net where OpenID is allowed, it should be me.

Playing with authentication systems…
I've added an OpenID authentication system to my blog. Mostly this is so that hopefully friends of mine who read the blog that are on LJ will have an easier time being able to post comments since they should just be able to use their LJ ID to authenticate to do the comments. Please let me know if this is working or not working as I'm pretty interested in seeing this sort of system becoming more common and adoption among the fringe can sometimes be a good proving ground for the core.

Moving electronically
For the very few people who do keep up with my site here there may be some downtime over the next few days. I'm moving everything to a remote host for quite a few very good reasons: I'm sure there are a couple of more that I'm not remembering at the moment but as you can see the list is pretty extensive and while in a lot of ways I'm going to miss doing all of my own hosting of everything the advantages are just too many at this point.

No surprises here
This actually took longer than I had expected: AACS has been cracked. Good analysis [here](http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061228-8510.html). I lost a bet (for no actual money, but I do owe someone dinner) that said it would be done before Thanksgiving with the release of the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player.

Identity shift
In the online world handles and usernames are a sometimes necessity that provide a certain small amount of obfuscation along with an often smaller string to remember a particular person. Back in the early 90's when I first started seriously to get into the BBS community I went by "[Line Noise](http://catb.org/jargon/html/L/line-noise.html)". At the time I thought it was perversely cool to have a handle that represented something that was an irritant to just about everyone.

A filling meal
FYI - If you have never made oatmeal out of a canister before (I've been having a packet of the instant varieties most mornings for the past 2 years) learn from my folly: Be sure that you figure out which ingredient is which measurement. Quaker Oats, somewhat differently expected, does <em>not</em> list the oats as the first ingredient in the cooking directions table. But I should be very full by the time I'm done with this at least.
