Too much stuff
[Update: I appear to have lost the original post contents because of a really weird problem I’m having with my WordPress installation. I’m going to put in a very similar, though not identical post instead since I can’t seem to find a cached version of the original.] I’ve been going through my attic lately and finding piles and piles of old computer stuff. I’m trying to decide if I want to get rid of it as one big lot of stuff, or part it out for whoever wants the various bits.

Netflix public profiles
I finally got around to looking at the new community features on Netflix this morning. There’s some interesting stuff they’re trying to do here that I can’t help but think would work better with a more open model for social graphs. It was only a month or so ago that I found that a couple of friends had Netflix accounts and managed to get they added to my friend’s list.

I’m not qualified
I really want some one to do a feminist deconstruction of the the game: Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble. No really. I honestly have no idea what to think about it. None at all.

Not what I needed right now
I’m pretty sure that any service/interface that features the ability to selectively share content with only those you wish has a pretty big flaw when displaying something like this: Instant paranoia generator: Just add emotionInstant paranoia generator: Just add emotion I am pretty certain that this is just a blip on LJ’s system that accidentally let it through but I am not precisely in the best state to take it wholly as harmless.

Sound memories
I’ve always found sense memories to be terribly interesting phenomena. My most intense sense memory involves the texture and flavor of pancakes with butter and apricot syrup at a Perkins somewhere near what I think was Omaha when I was somewhere around the age of 7ish. I think we were coming home from a funeral for a great uncle and got caught in a plains blizzard on the interstate but in particular the warmth and sweet/tart/sweet/buttery flavor of those pancakes in a warm room at a table with my family is one of my most enduring and cherished memories.

The new candy store
At this point I think the inherent advantage of acquiring recorded music solely through the means of traveling to a brick and mortar storefront, perusing the incredibly over complicated system to locate likely albums that I might like to purchase, physically bringing the stack of shiny plastic to the cashier with my own hands and whatever other means I can come up with in the moment, watching as each barcode or price sticker is laboriously tallied, and finally handing over a suitable bundle of paper or small plastic card which may or may not be returned with a large bag containing the shiny plastic I took such pains to collect is that is is not an easy process.

Tweeting tools
An important portion of my close friends recently found Twitter so I’ve decided to make the effort to re-create my account and use it. The core service is just about as consistent and stable as I remember it being last year, but I do have to say that the web site seems to be incredibly less stable than it used to be. It should not take me six attempts to do something as innocuous as fill out my profile information.

I’m sure they meant well
I just got a telemarketing call from the organization that calls itself “Americans for Balanced Energy Choices”, asking me if I would like to join their organization for free and they won’t even ever ask for any donations. I don’t know if I’m the only one, and I certainly hope I’m not, but anytime a “non-profit” organization calls and is not looking donations or some sort of financial transaction all sorts of red flags go up.

When the system mostly works
I just got off the phone with a very nice person from the Wells Fargo Fraud department who wanted to ask me some questions about some apparantly suspicious charges that were trying to come through on my checking account. Apparantly some nefarious person was attempting to buy software from Germany! Oops, that was me. And I had been becoming increasingly frustrated with the purchase attempt since I was pretty sure that I had been doing everything exactly correctly but for some reason the charges kept getting declined.

Not to be confused with SOSO
It occured to me while talking with Jennifer today about plans for things this weekend that for the first time in my life I have OSO-law’s that are more than theoretical. You know, family of your SO’s OSO. Surreal.
