It looks like King Kong devastating a nice area rug, but tastes much better than that sounds.

The East Lake St upswing continues it’s stratospheric ascent with this news in the Strib that the owner of Azia (and a few other noteworthy local restaurants) is putting in two new restaurants in the area. The former Ember’s/House of Lalibela/Molly Quin’s Irish Pub at 33rd and Lake is going to be a pan-asian place, and then he’s going to top that by putting in something called the “Manhattan Martini Lounge” at 35th and Lake. Both due before Thanksgiving, it should make for even more wonderful options for dining this fall.
In the last two weeks I’ve run into something a little different at two places that I’ve been for dinner. It appears that both the new Chatterbox Pub location in Highland Park and Signature Cafe in Prospect Park are serving sodas from The Shamrock Group. So far, the cola and the root beer flavors that I have tried are pretty decent, though nothing stellar. It will be interesting to see if I seem them showing up elsewhere around town, I know the original Chatterbox Pub near my home still has Weinhart’s for their root beer.
And while I’m thinking about it, do give the Signature Cafe a try if you have the chance. It’s got a very interesting and varied menu and a staff that is… well, friendly doesn’t begin to describe it.
Just in case any body else is keeping track, but the Twin Cities has reached critical mass as far as high end ice cream shops go.
The latest to open is PumpHouse Creamery, which I’m thinking I might try and drop by tomorrow afternoon to give a try. One of the reasons is that I’m very curious what all is in their “20 varieties” of bottled soda’s they also carry.
So with them and Izzy’s, Sonny’s, Sebastian Joe’s, Edina Creamery, and Grand Ole Creamery (which are the ones I can remember off the top of my head) this is just crazy. Can we really support that many really good ice cream places?

Dara’s new column has a bit of a zinger about the possible new Hooter’s in Block E:
“Yes, there may be hope for downtown. True, non-inebriated mainstays like Chez Bananas and the New French might have left, and Hooters might be fast on its way in the coming Block E development–oh no! I feel a rant coming on…can’t resist.
Are any of my tax dollars responsible for this Hooters? I mean, even one? I need to know so I can dedicate an equivalent amount to a deserving political organization, like maybe the Heather has Two Mommies PAC supporting the Overthrow of Gametic Reproduction, Crisis Line for the Flat-Chested, and Fund for Random Cattle-Prodding of Morons. Tight orange shorts, indeed. A Hooters. In the middle of downtown. And right where I had some very convenient surface parking. Another outrage!
Okay, I’m better now.”

After a half month hiatus, Dara Moskowitz’s weekly restaurant musings are back. Just what I needed, yet another place to add to my growing list of places to try.
