Changes

As you may have noticed, I have changed blogging tools from Blogger to WordPress. Blogger appears to be stuck with the same old fairly decent, yet not very shiny, features and I wanted something new to play with.

You will probably notice that both of the old blogs have been combined and the import of the old content worked almost as well as I wanted it to. I’ll be checking to see what I missed and adding it as I get more time.

L-Space is still running strong. Go poke you collective noses in if you have a minute. New blood is always nice.

A neat trick, if you can pull it off…

A friend recently posted on L-Space the following message:

Tired of speeding tickets?
Want to open up spaces between you and the cars around you?

Step 1. Tie these balloons to your car
Step 2. Drive VERY FAST.
Step 3. Watch people freak out
Step 4. Tell the officer you thought they were real!

A soda brewing mailing list!

Back in January I was playing around with the updated Google Groups and had created a group just to see what the management options were like. Well, one thing led to another and I never got back to playing with it for whatever reason.

Fast forward almost 3 months and there are actually people subscribed to the group! Who’d of thunk it, eh? :-)

Anyway, if you want to participate in the very beginning of what I hope can be come yet another resource for soda brewers on the net, please take a look at Google Groups Soda-Brewing

Alcohol content in soda

This post is actually something that I just sent out to a mailing list (more on that later) that I thought I should probably put here for future reference. If anyone does have solid numbers to share as far as alcohol content in soda, I would love to see them!

—-

While I don’t have any hard numbers to share for an answer, I’ve
always been told that the actual alcohol content from naturally
carbonated sodas is very, very small. A fairly simple way to look at
it is that when you brew beer, you let the fermentation run for weeks.
With soda you let the fermentation run for days and then slow or stop
the fermentation to keep your bottles from exploding.

I usually let me batches of soda run for about 3 days (60 hours
actually) at between 65F and 70F to get the carbonation level that I
like. After refrigeration (I have a separate bar fridge that I use
that is set to 45F) fermentation does continue, but at only a small
fraction of the pace.

Fairly normal beer brewing instructions say to run your first
fermentation cycle for 3 to 7 days and then to do secondary
fermentation (for carbonation) for 2-4 weeks, all at 65F to 75F. Even
if fermentation is a fairly constant process (which it isn’t quite)
the comparison between 3 days to 28 days of fermentation should tell
you a LOT about the comparative alcohol content of your soda.

A quick google search turned up a really good article on how to
calculate the alcohol content yourself:
http://science.howstuffworks.com/question532.htm

The article in particular is talking about beer but the actual
measurements are certainly valid for soda. You do have to take some
measurements at the beginning of a batch in order to make the
calculations work, but that’s just a good excuse to get another one
going isn’t it?

Maybe I’ll get around to doing a real test with various sugars to get
some real numbers for the next time somebody asks.

Transit(ion)

I finally got around to taking Transit to work this morning rather than driving. It’s been a long time coming and I’ve admittedly been just really damn lazy about it. It was a beautiful morning for it. A nice few blocks walk to the train platform in the rising sun and nicely crisp air and a nice ride on both the train and the bus. The only big downside? Everyone else who was waiting for the bus at MOA was smoking. Gr.

Still, total transit time was just about 1.5 hours, which certainly isn’t quick (~3-4 times what it takes me to drive at the same time of day) but it did allow for quite a bit of thinking and reading time which is something I don’t necessarily get if I’m driving.

The local watertowers

I’ve been fascinated by the old water towers around Minneapolis and St Paul for quite a few years, but only recently a friend ran across this old newsletter article.

Recent Reading: A King of Infinite Space by Allen Steele

I just finished up “A King of Infinite Space” by Allen Steele. I’ve been working through his bibliography since late last year and I think that while this is not my most favorite of his books yet, it was still definitely worth reading.

I think I just couldn’t get his resolution to quite fit the story that I had been reading. It’s not quite the wrong ending for the story, there were just some details that didn’t seem to work quite correctly.

A cola recipe!

A cola recipe!

Funny what you don’t find even when you’re looking sometimes. Interestingly enough it does not contain any cola nuts that I can see, though I haven’t looked into the details about how the various oils in the recipe are produced. I hope to be able to give this one a try in the next few weeks, with the modification of using yeast for carbonation, of course. I have some concerns about the phosphoric acid killing of the yeast, but I’ll certainly find out then.

TivoToGo has arrived!

TivoToGo has arrived! A bit late, and a not without some bitterness, but it’s finally here right now and I am currently copying a couple of things off just to see how it goes.

I’ve been hearing a lot on the net from people who already had gotten the update that they’re really disappointed about the transfer speed, but I can’t really say that I’m surprised. Even if you are using 802.11b, and not something sensible like 100mb ethernet, the biggest bottleneck here is NOT the network connection, but the USB 1.1 port that the network connection is attached to. Transmit speeds will not increase until they do something about that, and that’s not likely to be another service update.
